Waste & Recycling Collection

Residential curbside appliance collection is available by scheduled pick-up, for a small fee. The City accepts appliances from City residents and residential property owners only; no commercial disposal is allowed and proof of residence is required.

Collection is scheduled for the same day as your regular garbage collection day. Residents must purchase a $15 sticker for each appliance before a pick-up can be scheduled. To schedule a pick-up, please call the Street Division at 262-653-4070 between 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. or the Public Works Department at 262-653-4050 between 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Please call at least one business day prior to your regular garbage day.

General Guidelines

-Acceptable appliances: air conditioner, boiler, dehumidifier, dishwasher, dryer, freezer, furnace, hot water heater, humidifier, microwave, oven, pool heater, refrigerator, stove, trash compactor, washer and water heater
-Stickers are available for purchase at the following locations:

-Payment is accepted in cash or check only. Please bring proof of residence.
-Stickers may also be purchased by mailing a request with a check made payable to City of Kenosha and a self-addressed envelope to: City of Kenosha Public Works Department, 625 52nd Street, Room 305 Kenosha, WI 53140
-For safety reasons, doors from freezers and refrigerators must be removed.
-Food must be removed or appliance will not be collected and the Health Department will be notified.
-Appliances must be placed at the curb for collection.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

If you need to reschedule or cancel your collection for any reason, please call the Street Division at 262-653-4070 between 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. or the Public Works Department at 262-653-4050 between 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. If your appliance is taken from the curb before 7 a.m. on the day of your scheduled pick-up, call the Street Division at 7 a.m. on the day of your scheduled pick-up to cancel the collection. To cancel your pick-up you must speak with a person directly. If you successfully cancel your collection, AND you still have your sticker, you may bring your sticker back to where you purchased it for a refund, or you may use the sticker for another appliance pick-up.

Residential curbside brush collection is available by scheduled pick-up, May through November. Brush is defined as tree and shrub trimmings, less than 6 inches in diameter. Lumber, wood and similar building materials are not considered brush. The brush collection program serves property owners who maintain their own property and parkway. The City accepts these materials from City residents and residential property owners only; no commercial disposal is allowed. All material collected is chipped and recycled as mulch.

General Guidelines

-Remove all roots, stumps and dirt. Root balls should be placed in the trash.
-Bundle brush in 3-foot lengths using ONLY string or twine; no wire, plastic or cloth bindings are accepted.
-Limit bundles to 40 pounds each.
-Do not place bundles in bags or cardboard boxes.
-Place brush on the parkway, a few feet away from your regular garbage, trees, parked cars, fire hydrants, utility poles and other obstructions.

Residential curbside bulk waste collection is available by scheduled pick-up at a limit of 5 cubic yards. Residents are allotted four free bulk pick-ups annually. Additional pick-ups can be requested for a $50 fee, which must be paid before collection is scheduled. The City accepts bulk materials from City residents and residential property owners only; no commercial disposal is allowed.

Collection is scheduled for the same day as your regular garbage collection day. To schedule a pick-up, please call the Public Works Department at 262-653-4050 at least one business day prior to your regular garbage day.

General Guidelines

For a safe and successful pick-up:

• ○ Maximum 5 cubic yards or 30 bags per pick-up
• • An area that does not exceed 15' long by 3' wide by 3' high
• ○ Limit 40 pounds per bag, can or bundle
• ○ Items must fit in a truck opening of 4'x4' and two people must be able to lift the items waist high
• ○ Place items at the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on the day of your scheduled collection
  • • But no earlier than 6:30 p.m. the evening before your collection day
• ○ Keep bulk items in a separate pile
  • • Away from your automated garbage and recycling carts
  • • Away from trees, parked cars, fire hydrants, utility poles
  • • Away from any other obstructions
• ○ During winter months, bulk items must be free of ice and snow and set in a cleared area at the curb (i.e. driveway approach)
• ○ Items must fit in a truck opening of 4'x4' and two people must be able to lift the items waist high
• ○ No loose materials are accepted; all material must be contained in a bag, garbage can or bundled
  • • Do not put items in cardboard boxes as boxes are recyclable
• ○ Bulk waste must be clear of recyclables
  • • Bulk waste items may be tagged and not collected until recyclable are removed
• ○ Carpet, padding and rugs must be rolled in 3-foot sections and tied or taped. (No heavier than 40 pounds per bundle)
• ○ Windows can be no larger than 4'x4'. Please tape an ―"X" with heavy-duty tape across the glass on both sides to prevent breakage
• ○ Paneling, plywood, drywall and plasterboard must be in 4‘x4‘ or smaller sections
• ○ Lumber, PVC or metal piping must be in 3-foot lengths. Please pull out or bend over all nails
• ○ Building and demolition material is limited to 10 bags, cans or bundles at 40 pounds each
• ○ Items that will not be collected under bulk pickup: 
  • • yardwaste or recycling
  • • hazardous or liquid waste (i.e. paint)
  • • tanks of any type (i.e. propane, oxygen, gas, etc.) - unless cut in half
  • • pianos or organs
  • • cast iron bath tubs
  • • glass patio doors
  • • camper tops or truck caps
  • • boats
  • • concrete, stone, brick, asphalt or masonry
  • • sand, dirt or clay
  • • any item that doesn't meet guidelines listed above.

Any items not collected must be taken off the curb no later than 8:00 a.m. the day following the collection.

Recycling is mandatory statewide and the City receives grant money by meeting specific recycling guidelines. We need your help in order to continue receiving these funds—please recycle correctly! Curbside recycling collection occurs every other week for City residents on the same day of the week as regular garbage pick-up. The City is divided into two recycling routes: A and B. See the Recycling Calendar or our web app for more information on your route.

General Guidelines

-Recyclables must be placed loosely into the blue autocart with the lid closed.
-Place your recycling automated cart at the curb, a few feet away from your regular trash cart (and other obstacles), as it is collected by a different truck than your trash.
-Recyclables must be on the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day.
-Recyclables must not be placed at the curb prior to 6:30 p.m. the evening before your collection day.
-Do not mix recyclables with garbage. Recyclables will not be collected if any trash items are found in the recycling bag.
-Violations will be tagged and will not be collected. The tag will explain the problem, which will need to be corrected in order for the cart to be collected on your next scheduled day.
-Empty or tagged carts must be removed from the curb by 8:00 a.m. the following day. If tagged, the violation must be corrected before placement on your next collection day.
-Do not place bundled cardboard or blue/clear plastic bags in recycling cart.
-Plastic, metal, glass, paper, box board and cardboard may be commingled loosely in the blue autocarts.
-Styrofoam and plastic shopping bags are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash.

Guidelines by Material

Metal – food cans with lids, soda cans with lids, steel and tin cans
-Rinse cans, labels may remain on. 

Plastic – only plastics coded 1-7 (egg cartons are NOT accepted)
-Rinse containers and discard lids; labels may remain on. 

Glass – jars and bottles (window glass is not accepted as recycling—please call for bulk pick-up)
-Rinse containers and discard lids; labels may remain on. 

Paper – newspapers, magazines, paper cards, catalogs, posters

Box Board/Cardboard – Empty and flatten all boxes; cut or fold large boxes to 3'x3'.
-Note: Food-contaminated boxes are not recyclable.

General Guidelines

-Four tires are permitted for each pick-up, there is a $2 per tire fee.
-Only auto vehicle or small truck tires are allowed.
-Tires must be out on the curb by 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
-Keep tires in a separate pile from your regular garbage, away from trees, parked cars, fire hydrants, utility poles and other obstructions; they are collected by a different truck than your recyclables or trash.
-Violations will be tagged with an explanation of the problem.

The state of Wisconsin does not allow yard waste in its landfills. The best thing you can do with your yard waste is compost it or use it as mulch at home. Grass clippings can be left on the lawn and will provide nutrients for your turf. Clippings and leaves also make excellent mulch in gardens and around flowers and shrubs.

Residential curbside yard waste collection happens twice a year, during the spring and fall. Exact dates are announced via the newspaper, radio, cable TV Channel 25 and the City Recycling Calendar. The City accepts yard waste from City residents and residential property owners only; no commercial disposal is allowed. All yard waste must be placed in one of the following City-approved yard waste bags: Biobag, Bag to Nature or Ecoguard. These bags are available at your local retail, hardware and grocery stores. Acceptable Yard Waste Preparation

-Yard waste will be collected on your regular garbage day. Keep yard waste in a separate pile from your regular garbage, away from trees and other obstructions; it is collected by a different truck than your recyclables or trash.
-Limit 40 pounds per bag
-Material is collected curbside and MUST be in a City-approved biodegradable bag (Biobag, Bag to Nature or Ecoguard).
-Do not mix yard waste with garbage or recyclables.
-Acceptable items are: branches (pencil-sized or smaller), garden plants, grass clippings, leaves, pine cones/needles, tree seeds, shrub trimmings and weeds.
-Unacceptable items are: cemetery wreaths, cornstalks, decorations, floral arrangements, food waste, pumpkins, rhubarb stems, tree nuts and wood chips. These items will not be collected.
