General Information
- City of Kenosha employees (some positions require Kenosha County
residency) must become residents of the areas listed below within three
months after completion of their probation and must maintain such
residency during incumbency. Residency shall include the following
areas: Kenosha County, Racine County, except the Town of Waterford (the
Village of Waterford is acceptable), Franklin, Oak Creek and South
Milwaukee.
- All new employees are hired through the Human Resources Department with the
exception of the Library.
- New positions, promotions, transfers and vacancies are recruited for via
advertising, networking, the job line, website or mailings.
- Interested applicants' applications are collected and reviewed by the Human Resources
Department, and the selection process is conducted to determine the most
qualified individuals for the positions. The selection process may take the
form of a written, performance, oral and/or other exams the Human Resources
Department deems as appropriate. A number of top ranking applicants are
certified to the hiring department and the final interviews are conducted by
that department.
- When an individual is hired off a certified list, the individuals not hired are
put on an "eligibility list", and in most cases that list remains in effect for one
year. If another vacancy occurs for the same job classification, individuals are
considered and hired off the eligibility list until it expires.
Benefits - Full Time Employees
The Human Resources Department is responsible for administering benefits to all City
employees. City-provided benefits for full time employees are provided according to
appropriate negotiated labor agreement or policy and include the following:
Salary: A six month to one year probationary period is served (depending on
job classification). Pay raises are in steps and based on achievement of
satisfactory performance evaluations and time in the position.
Holidays: Twelve (12) days per year with 10 scheduled days and 2 floating
(Personal) days.
Vacation: From 7-12 days during first year of employment, 25 days after
25 years of employment.
Compensatory Time: Is available and varies by Department.
Tuition Aid: Employees who have completed their probationary period
may be reimbursed for 80% of tuition and other school expenses up to
$2000.00 per calendar year for approved courses ($1500 per year for Fire
Department.)
Deferred Compensation: Three deferred compensation plans (Section
457) are offered.
Sick Leave for non-protective service employees: Up to twelve
(12) working days per year, with 120 days maximum after which provision is
made for a sick leave bank. Partial payment of accumulated sick leave upon
death or retirement. Protective service employees (Fire & Police &
dependents): unlimited sick leave up to 1 year subject to review.
Health Insurance: Coverage for eligible employees becomes effective
depending on employees union status. Full premium paid by the City. In
addition, full premium cost paid by the City for employees with 15 years of
service retiring on or after their 60th birthday (or at age 62 for employees with
less than 15 years of service) until coverage under another insurance plan or
Medicare becomes available.
Pension: Wisconsin Retirement System defined benefit plan. The City pays
both the employer and employee portion.
Life Insurance: Effective the first of the month following six months of
employment in the amount of the employee's annual salary rounded to the
next highest $1000.00. Full premium paid by the City. Supplemental and
Additional Life Insurance is available at a very low cost to employees.
Duty Related Death Benefit: If employee is killed in the line of duty,
one year's salary is paid to the beneficiary.
Work Productivity Bonus (attendance): Provisions for $100 or
$125 payment for using no sick leave or working a pre-determined number of
hours during each of the three (4 month) periods in a calendar year.
Section 125 Plan: Employees have the opportunity to participate in a
flexible spending plan.
Direct Deposit: All City of Kenosha employees are paid by direct deposit
into their checking or savings account. Salaried employees are paid twice a
month. Hourly employees are paid weekly

Kenosha.
