Slide #3 Surgeon John Baxter served with the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry throughout the Civil War. In this photograph, Baxter wears a double-breasted frock coat with a major's shoulder straps. In keeping with military regulations for medical officers, Baxter's silk sash is emerald green and is adorned with silk bullion fringe. He also displays a regulation Model 1840 medical officer's sword. His trousers are dark blue and feature a thin gold stripe on the outer seam. On the table rests a non-regulation straw hat, a very popular style of headgear worn by many Civil War soldiers. |
